Orbea updates its Gain e-bike with more integration and more tyre clearance

Orbea has revamped its carbon and alloy Gain electric road bikes, introducing new geometry, internal cable routing for higher-spec models, increased tire clearance, and integrated lighting. The new Gain is designed to enhance your ride with more speed and range, without overpowering it.

Updated Geometry and Tyre Clearance
The Gain’s geometry has been refined with a lowered bottom bracket for added stability and shorter chainstays. The 2021 Gain now offers tire clearance up to 40 mm, allowing for a variety of tire choices to enhance comfort or off-road capability. Two-ring models come with 30 mm tubeless tires, while single-ring models feature 38 mm tires.

Integrated Lighting
Orbea has seamlessly integrated lights into the new Gain. The rear light is built into the low-profile seatpost clamp, and the front light is part of the integrated display mount. The Gain comes with an ANT+ display unit that provides motor stats and other ride data, with an option to add a brighter front light.

Sleek Cable Management
On top-spec models, Orbea has hidden the cabling from the bars through the underside of the stem and into the head tube. This system, used on other Orbea bikes, supports both mechanical and electronic shifting.

Advanced Rear Hub Motor
The 2021 Gain features a new Mahle ebikemotion X35 Plus rear hub motor, offering 40 Nm of torque and 250 watts of power. It is paired with a 250 Wh slimline internal battery in the down tube, maintaining a sleek silhouette similar to a traditional road bike.

Discreet Controller and Display
The controller is a slimline button recessed into the front of the top tube, surrounded by an LED ring indicating assistance level and battery charge. A new display unit fits onto an out-front mount on the bars, providing additional information.

Lightweight and Efficient Motor
Weighing 2.1 kg, the motor uses a sensor built into the bottom bracket lockring and a new torque simulation algorithm to match the motor’s power output to your pedaling. The motor cuts out at the maximum permitted speed of 25 km/h in the UK, EU, and Australia (20 mph in the USA), with minimal drag.

Simplified Connectivity
A single cable connects the motor and battery, hidden under a cover, making it easy to remove the rear wheel. The ebikemotion system is also used by other e-road bikes like the Scott Addict eRide, Ribble SL e, and Wilier Cento1 Hy. You can add a bottle cage range extender battery to increase capacity by 208 Wh, boosting the Gain’s range by 70%.

Customization Options
As with other Orbea bikes, you can use the MyO app to select your own color scheme for the Gain and choose components to suit your preferences. The Gain is available in a wide range of specs, from Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 to Claris, and includes single-ring options with Shimano GRX groupsets and 38 mm tires.
